Glass Rope Packing

E Glass Rope Packing

  • E glass packing is braided / plaited entirely using 6-9µ E glass yarns into round, square or rectangular rope sections.
  • E glass yarns are textured and rated to 550°C in optimum conditions.
  • The base fibres are inorganic, sterile, incombustible and they have low thermal conductivity making them excellent in high temperature industrial oven and furnace door sealing applications.
  • E glass rope packing are available in three different constructions each with their own unique characteristics as explained below.

Applications

  • Rope Door Seals for Furnaces / Kilns / Industrial Ovens and Boilers.
  • ‘O’ Ring Rope Gasket Seals

Constructions Explained

Standard

rope packings are produced by braiding glass fibre yarn over a compact core of glass fibre yarns. They are compact, firm and flexible with high mechanical resistance and excellent static sealing properties.

Soft Core

rope packings are produced by braiding glass fibre yarns around a central core of C glass fibre insulation. Soft core packings whilst still dense, are lighter in weight but importantly more flexible than standard or brick solid packings. They have high thermal insulation capacity and excellent static sealing properties.

Brick Solid

rope packings are produced by the “Braid-over-Braid” method where glass fibre yarns are heavy braided over a very compact core of braided glass yarns. Brick solid packings are a total braided construction and are therefore exceptionally compact, brick solid in density and maintain superior mechanical resistance under pressure, compression and abrasion.

*Standard rope packings account for 90% of all packings produced, therefore if the construction type is not known, it is standard construction which we will quote for.

Enhancements

Textile Technologies can further enhance the above rope packings as follows:
Dry Graphite Dispersion
Apply a dry black graphite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and aesthetics.
Apply a wet black graphite dispersion to improve sealing qualities and resistance to hot gases.
Apply a vermiculite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and increase its temperature resistance up to 1000°C.

Rope Packings can be covered with a metal outer braid of galvanised steel, stainless steel or Inconel.  This creates an extremely robust, abrasion resistant uniform seal.

FAQs

Does glass rope packing have high heat resistance?

This depends on the grade of glass. E Glass rope packing to 550°C, HT750 Glass rope packing to 750°C and HR800 Glass Packing to 800°C in optimum conditions.

Yes. The more heat cycles and the longer the packing is in situ the more quickly it will become brittle. It must be understood that all glass door seals have a life span and should be re-fitted during planned maintenance programs. Textile Technologies maintain the highest stocks of glass furnace door packings in the UK to ensure quick turn around during service and shut-downs.

No, it is non-flammable and safe for heat-intensive environments.

Yes, its fiberglass structure provides excellent heat insulation.

Absolutely—its soft, compressible structure creates a tight, reliable seal.

Yes, it is resistant to oils, solvents, and many corrosive agents.

Yes, it absorbs expansion and contraction without losing strength for a duration.

Yes, it can be cut, shaped, and fitted without special tools.

Yes, it is more affordable than silica and ceramic fibre thought it can not cope with the same temperatures as these fibres.

Yes, it helps retain heat inside furnaces and heat treatment ovens, improving efficiency.

Yes, it lasts longer even under continuous heat and vibration.

Very it can bend and compress to fit uneven or irregular gaps.

The addition of vermiculite or our Armorpak metal overbraiding greatly improves mechanical wear.

Yes, it often replaces rubber or metal gaskets in high-temperature zones.

Yes, by preventing heat leakage and smoke escape.

Only to a degree. The more vibration the more quickly seal will deteriorate.

Yes, fiberglass is non-toxic and does not release harmful fumes.

Glass Rope Packing

Glass Rope Packing for Industrial Sealing Applications

Rope packing is a proven sealing solution used across a wide range of high-temperature and mechanical applications.

Designed to form a reliable seal under pressure, industrial rope packing is commonly specified for boilers, pumps, access doors, inspection hatches, and static sealing environments where resistance and durability are critical.

Each rope packing product is manufactured to deliver consistent performance, offering a balance of compressibility, mechanical strength, and thermal resistance.

Selecting the correct packing rope ensures long-term sealing efficiency while reducing maintenance intervals and unplanned downtime.

Graphite Glass Rope Packing

Glass Packing Rope Performance Under Pressure

Packing rope is engineered to perform under sustained pressure while maintaining seal integrity.

When correctly sized and installed, rope packing adapts to surface irregularities, creating an effective seal without excessive compression or added weight.

This performance makes rope packing suitable for:

  • Boilers operating under thermal cycling
  • Pumps requiring stable static sealing
  • High-temperature doors and flanges

The resistance of the fibre construction allows the packing to retain structure even after prolonged exposure to heat and mechanical load.
